Florida - the sunshine state.

Florida got its name from the Spanish for Easter Holiday (Pascua Florida) in 1513, because that's when the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon discovered it.
It's famous for its sunshine, theme parks, alligators, a totally laid back lifestyle and Jimmy Buffett songs.
Here's a short collection of shots from around Florida to the song MargaritaVille, by Jimmy Buffett. Even though Jimmy Buffett was born in Mississippi I always associate him with Florida because of his songs - like this one!
More than 60 million people visit Florida each year, attracted by the theme parks - Walt Disney World Resort, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Island of Adventure, Seaworld and many more - there are 20 of them altogether.
Walt Disney World Resort itself is made up of 4 theme parks and more than 20 hotels, so there's something there for everyone.

Florida's most famous residents are its alligators.
They live in all 67 counties of Florida and can grow to 14 feet in length, weighing up to 1,000 pounds. The flat swamplands that make up large parts of Florida form the perfect environment for alligators.
A trip to Florida would not be complete without seeing an alligator but, luckily, you won't have to try too hard to find one. There are numerous tours and trips organized by local companies where you can travel into the Everglades in an airboat (those flat bottomed boats which are driven by a big air propeller).
These trips usually last between 30 and 60 minutes and you'll see a lot more than just alligators - the Florida Everglades are also home to a wide range of birds and different species of trees and plants.
The other highly popular past time in Florida is deep sea fishing.
Again, there are numerous companies offering fishing trips of anything up to 12 hours long - and if you've caught a few big ones 12 hours is plenty long enough!
On most of them you get to keep and eat what you catch, as long as it exceeds the minimum size requirements. Most boats have scales aboard and any fish that doesn't meet requirements is immediately returned to the water.
Florida is also a jumping off point for many Caribbean destinations and Miami boasts one of the largest cruise ship ports in the world.
