US East Coast Cities - Filled With History, Character and Tradition

Martin Malden here - thanks for stopping by!

New York, Boston and Philadelphia - all US East Coast cities that are filled with history, character and tradition.

Firstly New York - what's there to say that hasn't already been said!? I found it exciting and unnerving at the same time.

Exciting because of the pace, and the sheer variety of what's available there, unnerving because the subway felt vaguely threatening. Or maybe it was just my mind going over the top.

Here's a video of some of the sights in New York:

On my first trip there I went out onto the roof of WTC 1 - which was spectacular.

I was on a training course with the company I worked with at the time and the course was held in WTC 1 - so 9/11 affected me perhaps a bit more than some non-Americans because I felt something of a connection - even though I only spent a week there.

South Street Seaport is a great place to chill out with some wine and seafood - I ate my first ever Mussels there. And being near the financial district and Wall Street means that there are lots of famous landmarks to visit.

I also took a ferry across to Staten Island. The ferry route passes close to the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island itself is so peaceful and quiet it's like you've traveled to a completely different city.

Philadelphia was established as a town in the early 1600's and as a city in 1701.

It's also the city where the US constitution was signed and the first congresses sat.

And, of course, where the Rocky movies were made.

Today it's a thriving and diverse business center, with manufacturing, tourism and health care providing a large portion of its output.

It's great for shopping, with several malls, markets and shopping districts and many specialist, standalone boutiques and shops.

There are lots of restaurants offering a diverse range of cuisines.

The Italian culture is strong in Philadelphia so Italian food is easy to find, both in fine Italian restaurants as well as the Italian Market where you can get all types of Italian cheeses, wines and meats.

Boston, one of America's oldest cities, was first established as a town in 1630. It became a city in 1822.

The Boston Tea Party, which took place in 1773, was one of the first overt expressions of frustration and defiance by the Americans against the British colonial power.

It got its name because the Americans destroyed hundreds of crates of tea belonging to the British East India Company that were sitting on ships in Boston Harbour.

Here's a video that shows some beautiful images from around modern Boston:

In my one visit to Boston I did get a real sense of the European character of the city.

It's one of the most beautiful cities I've seen. Historic buildings, the harbor and quaint narrow streets all make it a real 'Europe Meets America' place.

Today Boston is a leading economic and cultural center for the New England states, famous for its wonderful universities (Harvard, MIT, in nearby Cambridge, MA), fantastic hospitals and the Boston Red Sox.

The US East Coast - diverse, historic and fascinating!
